Procedures

Going To Jail After An Arrest

When someone gets arrested in California, they are brought to a local law enforcement station for processing and booking. They will go to a local police department or sheriff's station with a holding facility or jail.

The California booking process can take a substantial amount of time, depending on the jail's size and how hectic the station may be. Booking is typically completed within an hour, sometimes several hours. Generally, the bigger the jail, the longer the booking process is going to take. For instance, large county jails, like the Men's Central Jail or Santa Ana Jail, may take up to or more than 12 hours for processing an arrestee into the system. For example, large county jails, like the Men's Central Jail or Santa Ana Jail, may take up to or over 12 hours for system processing of an arrestee. These two jails are particularly notable because arrestees in Los Angeles County and Orange County will probably be taken or transferred to these jails if they are not bailed out of smaller jails quickly. We provide bail bonds for all California jails, including Santa Ana and Men's Central Jail bail bonds.

Booking And Processing

A detainee will first be searched for weapons and drugs. Personal belongings will be inventoried and kept by the jailer. During jail time, a detainee will not have access to their money, credit cards, cell phones, etc. The booking process includes a background check, checking for warrants, fingerprinting, and processing into the computer system. Each local jurisdiction will have a computer system. There is also a national criminal computer system that will be cross-referenced and updated for all arrests.

Calls From Someone In Jail

Some jail cells have a payphone for inmate use, often including the yellow pages' bail section. Otherwise, arrestees will receive phone allowance at the jailer's convenience. Inmates are not allowed to receive phone calls or messages. If someone in jail calls you, get as much information from them as possible. Find out what jail they are in, what they were arrested for, if they want to be bailed out and if there are personal circumstances that need to be addressed for them, for example, job notification, children, and pets.

Jail Processing And Bail Setting

The work required on the part of the jail staff to get the individual processed is substantial. The entire process can be time-consuming and stressful. Booking can take longer if it occurs during the night, weekend, meal times, shift changes, or other busy times. The top priority of the jail is to keep everyone safe. If a defendant is eligible for bail, it will be arranged during the booking process. A bail bond is not complete until manual work and computer processing is complete. After booking, there are various options for the release. You can start by working with a bond dealer directly after the arrest. Some jails will book quicker, knowing that a bond is in the process because they require the jail space.

After booking, an individual may be released from jail on bail bond or held until arraignment if bail is not posted. Arraignment commonly takes place in three business days. For instance, someone arrested on Thursday night would typically be arraigned on the following Monday.
